My concept is to integrate some sort of way for users to have Facebook alert them when friends sign on Facebook Chat.
The idea behind it would be if someone needed to talk to someone about something, they could have Facebook alert them with sounds or popups, so that they wouldn’t have to keep checking. For example, tonight specifically, I wanted to get a hold of someone and had to keep checking chat to see if that person might get on. I am too lazy to actually call or text, haha, so that was my way of getting in touch.
Another way this could be useful is for just general use when people might want to have friends always alert them when they become available to chat.
The screenshots I took show where this could possibly be implemented. The place where the option to have alerts turned on in general is shown in screenshot to the right. It would be under the settings section.
While the place where it would show if the specific person had an alert on them is shown in the picture to the left. As you can tell by the blue line, the alerts can be shown next to the person’s name. This way you could see if someone on your list is already being alerted.

I definitely agree with this. The chat feature really does need some sort of sound notification or even a visual notification when a friend logs on. If this were implemented I believe the chat function of facebook would be used much more. Many people we have found don’t use the chat feature because they didn’t even know it existed. If you present notification pop-ups or something when someone logs on then people would see them and possibly engage in conversation.
If we went with the visual pop-up style notification it would probably have to be somewhat small so that the users don’t get too annoyed with the pop-ups coming every time someone logs on. Maybe you could add certain people to a list and only when those people come online THEN you would get a notification.
